The dry air froze within her lungs making it difficult to breathe. Above, cruel flakes of white began to fall out of season, layering the ground with a white film of death. Ashen clouds had clumped together overhead giving off a depressing atmosphere that sank into one’s bones.

This frigid air pressed down on the band of weary fighters as they gathered together in a confused cluster.

Arkhamia glanced about the area in the same confused worry that mirrored the faces of the Chess Tournament participants around her. It was obvious from the sudden increase in bodies that there weren’t just the participants, but, their friends and family as well.

Eyebrows knitting into a worried knot, Arkhamia crossed her arms over her chest as she dissuaded the idea that anything had happened to her family just because they weren’t there. They were probably too busy back in Khadroma with their duties and whatnot. Yes, yes, that was the most obvious answer.

As the redhead attempted to come up with multiple reasons as to why her family was not present, Amelia glanced down at Arkhamia noting the obvious traces of worry on her comrade’s face. Yes, ‘glanced down’. That girl was a living tower.

“Hey, Arkham…. Are you okay?” Amelia whispered under her breath. It was obvious that the nervous anticipation of the crowd had gotten to her as well. Who wouldn’t after finding out that part of their souls had been stolen?

Arkhamia forced a smile. “Never better, princes--”

“They’ve already destroyed Khadroma.”

Time stopped.

Arkhamia’s eyes flew wide as she snapped her head in Kanbo’s direction. The redhead’s smile fell off her face and was replaced with a look of mortification. Her features paled resembling that of paper as she took a step back.

The voices about her began to blur as a wave of dizziness sent her to her knees and bile up her throat.

If what they were saying is true, then Central City must have been destroyed by now.
If what they were saying is true, then her home must have been overrun.

Her family, being the proud Khadromans they were, must have stayed to fight. Her family could have very well been killed in this-

“Genocide...” the words escape Arkhamia’s lips as her body breaks out into incorrigible shudders.

No.

This couldn’t be happening.

Her family couldn’t be dead. That’s impossible. Her father was a bishop. He had little to no fighting experience, so he should have evacuated with her sisters. Her sisters on the other hand… no. They may be fighters, but they were still children. At least, children to Arkhamia.

Zera was the second born but even then she was only 16. If anyone would be dead it would be her mother. But even that was highly unlikely. Her mother was the head of the Shyr clan. She was strong. Stronger than anyone Arkhamia knew. There was no way that her mother could be taken down by these ‘Isshins’.

Yet, deep down, she knew that she was wrong. There would be hundreds, no, thousands of dead to be identified.

Her family would be a part of them.
